Who doesn’t love Fourth of July and summer fireworks? Your pet might not. Dogs, cats and other animals can get spooked easily by the loud bang of fireworks, and it’s our job to do whatever we can to help keep them safe. Animals may get scared or confused when the unexpected bang occurs, causing them to run away in fright, or otherwise injure themselves out of fear.
Here are some tips to help keep our animal friends safe during the Fourth of July and summer fireworks:
- Give pets a safe environment from the loud noises. Dogs often like to be in a small space when they feel frightened, such as their crate or dog bed. Cats routinely hide in closets or under beds during fireworks. Make sure you know where your furry friends are before and after the fireworks display.
- In or outdoors, avoid leaving pets alone during fireworks. If you must leave pets alone, make sure all windows and doors are securely shut. Familiar noises like the T.V., a fan or the air conditioner can help lessen the stress of the loud noises.
- If your pet seems scared, avoid punishment and speak calmly and cheerfully. Give pets a distraction from the loud booms with a KONG®toy full of treats. At Purr’n Pooch we fill the toy up with treats then seal it up with peanut butter and put it in the freezer. Pups love to lick the frozen peanut butter then get to the treat. - Gentle pressure can help relieve anxiety. If a furry friend feels stressed, a wrap fastened around the midsection can calm the nervous system through a hug-like pressure. We suggest using Thundershirt, available at both Purr’n Pooch locations in sizes XS, S, M, L, and XL.
- Don’t forget about the ears. Our pets are sensitive to loud noises just like us, and Mutt MuffsHearing Protection for dogs is a great way to protect hearing. The muffs are comfortable, lightweight and come with adjustable straps and wide, foam-filled ear seals for the highest level of comfort. Make sure to supervise your pooch while the muffs are on.
- ID your pet. Make sure all your pets have an ID tag or microchip so they can be returned to your loving home if they escape.
- Educate yourself. Make sure you know when your community and surrounding area is having fireworks displays so you can be prepared to protect your pets.
