NJ Betsy’s Law a Step Forward for Pets but More Change Needed

Betsy's Law should be amended to require 24-hour supervision at all animal care facilities

“Anyone that takes on the responsibility of caring for pets should take on the responsibility of caring for them in a responsible way.”

Betsy the Rottweiler was still a pup, just 16 months old when she accidentally hung herself in a kennel at a veterinarian’s office. Betsy had gone in for routine eye surgery and was recovering when the incident happened. Her owner, Madeleine Kayser, was told that her beloved dog would need to recover from her surgery and that she would need overnight care. Betsy was wearing an unbreakable collar and hung herself. Kayser worked for eight years to get a protective law signed in the state of New Jersey mandating that veterinary offices and animal hospitals post if they do not offer 24-hour supervision. The law, known as Betsy’s Law, was signed into law September 15. (Story here from CBS New York)

Dick Palazzo, owner of Purr’n Pooch Pet Resorts with 45 years experience in the pet care industry, feels the newly signed Betsy’s Law is a good start, but the law should take pet care a step further. Dick believes that any animal care facility (veterinary and animal hospitals, boarding and kennel facilities, pet sitters) should be required to provide 24-hour supervision of animals.

“The unforeseen can happen, and there needs to be someone there who can handle an emergency situation,” said Dick. “To provide proper care, we in the pet care industry have a responsibility to stand up for these pets who can’t stand up for themselves.”

According to Kayser, 90 percent of vet offices and animal hospitals in New Jersey do not have 24-hour care. Dick backs this statistic up, saying that very few pet care facilities offer 24-hour supervision for pets staying overnight.

“You wouldn’t leave your small child alone, so why are we allowing our pets to be left alone for 12 hours?” said Dick. “Especially after a surgery or a procedure that requires monitoring. Anyone that takes on the responsibility of caring for pets should take on the responsibility of caring for them in a professional way.”

Dick believes that when it comes to the care of our beloved pets, the best and most competent practice is 24-hour care, whether the location is a hospital, boarding facility, or pet sitter service. Purr’n Pooch provides staff on-site 24 hours a day to care for any pets staying overnight in both his Tinton Falls and Wall pet resorts.

“We recognize that different pets have different reactions to situations,” says Dick. “A dog may be terrified of a thunderstorm and our staff is trained to recognize the signs of distress and can handle the situation accordingly. If there’s no one there to witness distress, no care can be given.”

Dick believes that Betsy’s Law is a good start in informing the public of the issues that can occur at pet care facilities, but that a stricter and more specific law is needed. He commends the work that Kayser and the Lt. Gov. have done to move toward better and safer care for pets.

“As pet care providers, it is our responsibility to give our pets the best, most thorough care possible,” said Dick. “And this requires 24-hour supervision.”

If you feel the same, please consider writing your local elected officials.

Is It Possible? Your Pet Has a Best Friend

Best-Friends

The bond between humans and their pets is strong, but the bond between animals themselves can be just as resilient. Do a quick Google search and you’ll find stories of cats befriending pigs, elephants connecting with dogs, and even a tiger, a lion and a bear (Oh my!) becoming best buddies.

According to Marc Bekoff, a professor at Colorado University, animals are extremely selective in who they choose to form close bonds with. In the case of inter-species relationships, he says even the strangest of pairs can form strong, connected bonds with a large amount of trust. Animals exhibit emotions much like humans and often need someone to lean on, just like humans do.

At Purr’n Pooch Pet Resorts, many special friends enjoy relationships with each other. Owner Dick Palazzo has been caring for pets for over 45 years and is often asked if pets can form emotional attachments to one other as well as their owners.

“There is a real bond between animal and animal or animal and human,” he said. “It is true love.”

Here are just a few of Purr’n Pooch’s friends who have formed tight bonds:

FARRAH AND LUCY

Farrah, a 2-year-old Brittany mix, and Lucy, an 18-month-old cattle dog and shepherd mix, became fast friends at Purr’n Pooch’s daycare. Both pups were adopted from shelters; Farrah was rescued from a kill shelter in Alabama and Lucy was adopted through 3 Hearts 4 Paws Animal Rescue.

Both dogs are extremely active and full of energy, which may be what brought them together in the first place.

“Lucy just loves people and animals,” said Liz Barrows, Lucy’s mom. “She has so much energy and is so social. She runs around and tumbles with all the other dogs in daycare. She never sits still and it seems like she’s always building up more energy!”

“Farrah is extremely sweet, cuddly and loves attention,” said Nancy Bilow, Farrah’s mom. “She has a lot of energy.”

Lucy and Farrah, who is aptly named for her layered locks, are often spotted at Purr’n Pooch romping around and enjoying each other’s company. And their humans are grateful the two have a place to spend the days in a safe and fun environment.

“The staff at Purr’n Pooch are so invested in each pet they care for, “ said Nancy. “They like what they do and are so nice and helpful.”

“Purr’n Pooch does a fantastic job of watching pet behavior and knowing exactly where to place our dogs,” said Liz. “It warms my heart to know that Lucy spends her entire day with Farrah.”

MAGGIE AND NINJA

Ninja, a 5-year-old cat, and Maggie, a German Shepherd, were inseparable from the start. Maggie has since passed away, but the bond between the cat and dog was strong. Sandi, a manager at Purr’n Pooch, brought Ninja home as a 7-week-old kitten, and says Maggie treated him like he was her very own baby.

“Maggie would get upset when Ninja left the house to go to the vet,” said Sandi. “They were best friends.”

A study of 170 pet owners with both a dog and a cat found that, despite the very popular idea that cats and dogs are genetically predisposed to dislike each other, cats and dogs not only get along, but learn to communicate with one another. The study found that more than 75 percent of the dog and cat pairs performed some sort of greeting ritual (rubbing noses, purring, etc.)

Maggie was a lover of people and kids, with some anxiety issues. Ninja is a happy-go-lucky cat, and very sweet. Their intense connection left Ninja depressed when Maggie passed away.

“It took over a week for Ninja to grieve,” said Sandi.

Dr. Nicholas Dodman, one of the world’s most noted and celebrated veterinary behaviorists and a board member of the Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals, firmly believes animals are thinking, attentive beings capable of complicated emotions, such as love and grief. Ethology, the scientific and objective study of animal behavior, is his guide of study.

Dr. Dodman believes having a basic understanding of ethology is important to pet owners and may help them understand typical behavior for their pet. Feuding cats may have territory concerns. Timid dogs may have experienced early trauma.  Understanding a pet’s normal behavior helps us determine if something is wrong with them when their behavior changes.

So it’s time to dispel the old myth that dogs and cats can’t get along, or that our pets can’t form tight bonds with other animals. While not every canine and feline will become best friends, it’s not out of the ordinary for them, or other pairs of pets, to become connected.

The bonds between animal best buds are strong and the emotions that pets experience because of them are very much real. Bring your pet to Purr’n Pooch and make friends for a lifetime.

When we started out, we had one location in Wall, NJ and pet care services were thought of very differently. Let’s just say dog daycare wasn’t the service that it has become today. People brought their dogs to kennels while they vacationed, where they would be walked and fed, then placed back in cages. This was an accepted practice at the time by both pet owners and industry leaders.

As a trainer and behavioralist, I knew our dogs needed more and enjoyed opening up Purr’n Pooch’s kennel doors for them to play in a supervised, leash-free environment. They thrived and had a blast while staying with us. Today, more than 45 years later, I experience the same joy when I step into our over 50 playgrounds where our dogs romp and play.

It’s heartwarming for me to see how through the years pets have taken greater roles in our lives. They bring us great joy. In my family, we have shared the love of many, some who are still with us today and others whose spirits continue to live in our hearts.

Thank you for your continued trust and friendship and we look forward to seeing you and your pet in the New Year.

It’s going to be the best year yet!

Celebrating Pit Bull Awareness Month

Celebrating Pit Bull Awareness Month

The month of October is designated as Pit Bull Awareness Month, a time to bring positive awareness and attention to the American Pit Bull Terrier. During this month, we also celebrate National Pit Bull Awareness Day, a day of appreciation and education designed to change perceptions and stereotypes about pit bulls and their responsible owners. This year, National Pit Bull Awareness Day falls on Saturday, October 25th.

Pit bulls are commonly misunderstood for being dangerous, vicious and untrustworthy; however, that is just not the case. It is extremely important that we take this time to educate people on the truth about this incredible breed of dog and work towards clearing up any misunderstanding. People hear myths and stories in the news about pit bulls and make assumptions, but the reality is that if there is ever an issue involving a pit bull, the problem is not because of the breed –it’s because of the human.

Unfortunately, there are irresponsible owners who train pit bulls to fight in order to make a profit and provide so-called “entertainment”. In many cases, those dogs who cannot go on are abandoned or abused by their owners. But pit bulls are not inherently dangerous. Just like other dogs, they can become violent and aggressive through a lack of training, abuse, neglect and irresponsible ownership and breeding, as well as a lack of attention to health and temperament issues. If they are treated with respect, properly trained and cared for, pit bulls will not exhibit these negative traits.

All dogs, including pit bulls, are individuals and no one deserves to be judged based on a stereotype. Through education and compassion, we can work to bring about a positive change for these incredible dogs.

To celebrate Pit Bull Awareness Month, we’re sharing stories about some of our wonderful pit bull friends we’ve had the pleasure of spending time with at Purr’n Pooch’s doggie daycare.

MEET JAX

Celebrating Pit Bull Awareness MonthJax, a five year old pit bull, is the pup of Purr’n Pooch’s Betsy Palazzo Dudick, who adopted him in 2011 after he was found roaming the streets of Hoboken, not chipped and malnourished. They found each other after Betsy appeared as a guest on Tracie Hotchner’s pet talk radio show to talk about the family business. Hotchner just knew Jax was a good fit for Betsy, who would be able to give him the appropriate care and training. Today Jax is the proud brother of a one-year old baby named Milana and a gorgeous black kitty named Maggie.

MEET HAZEL

Celebrating Pit Bull Awareness MonthHazel was welcomed into her loving family at 5 months old after being passed around from house to house and ultimately living out of a car on fast food. Her human brother Ryan rescued her from her unfortunate situation in May 2009. Never having a dog before, Hazel’s family was a bit reluctant to take her in, especially after hearing the myths of how dangerous pit bulls could be. But after a few weeks of time spent with her, they fell in love and she is now a huge part of their family. Hazel is a loyal sweetheart, and loves going for walks, chasing bunnies, chewing Chuckit!® balls and spending time with her friends at Purr‘n Pooch.

MEET STELLA

Celebrating Pit Bull Awareness MonthStella, a 2 year old pit bull, is the biggest love bug. She was taken in as a stray by the Humane Society and adopted by her forever family at 7 months old. She is friendly with both dogs and children. She loves everyone she meets and is full of energy; we must say she’s a big fan of our playground!

At night, she cuddles up in bed with her 5 year old human brother Shane, also her best buddy. Don’t let her size fool you –even though she is 57 pounds she will still try to snuggle up on your lap!

MEET STAR

Celebrating Pit Bull Awareness MonthBefore Star found her forever home she was left abandoned in an apartment with another dog. She had a crossed eye, which was probably a result of poor nutrition. At the time she was adopted, she loved dogs but was scared of people. Her family wanted her to continue playing with other dogs, so we agreed to slowly ease her into daycare at Purr’n Pooch, limiting her contact with unfamiliar people. Now she has lots of friends! Star loves squeaky balls, going for walks and cuddling. At home, Star is a funny girl who makes her family laugh every day. According to her family, she is such a joy to be around and they’re glad they’ve gotten to spend time with her.

No matter your dog’s breed, the experience of the pet boarding and daycare staff you choose is key to your dog having a fun, safe experience while in their care. Read Dick Palazzo’s blog on the 4 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Daycare Facility for more on the topic.
