HISTORY

1960s
Purr’n Pooch, Wall Township opens its doors in 1969, becoming the first “controlled environment” boarding facility in the country.

1970s
Purr’n Pooch opens its second location in Tinton Falls in 1971. Dick Palazzo, a graduate of Saint Leo University and a veterinarian student from the University of Florida, graduate of the Stanford School of Grooming and a graduate of the Volhard Dog Training Academy becomes general manager of both facilities. With Dick and his wife Mary’s foresight and knowledge, Purr’n Pooch adds grooming, training and transportation to its menu of services. In 1977, Purr’n Pooch becomes a charter member of the American Boarding Kennel Association (ABKA).

1980s
Play areas are developed, doggie daycare is offered and socialized pet boarding incorporates full-day playtime and private accommodations. Additionally, Estate Programs are created for the peace of mind of clients who have no home for their dog or cat to go when they pass on.

1990s
Tinton Falls and Wall lobbies are renovated transforming them into welcoming, warm environments for both people and pups. Outdoor play areas are expanded and the cattery is renovated wirh custom designed cat condos.

2000s
Tinton Falls is completely renovated and enlarged. Dick designs a feline fantasy complete with natural rock waterfall, plasma televisions, and personally supervises the construction of individual cat suites. Luxury canine accomodations feature leather couches, televisions and are completed. Doggie daycare play areas are enlarged and playgrounds are designed with special inground pools for our guests delight.
Dick and Mark Palazzo’s daughters, Betsy and Koren, join in the full-time operation and management of the Purr’n Pooch Pet Resorts. Mary modernizes the Purr’n Pooch, transforming the lobbies into welcoming, warm environments for both people and pups. Koren brings her background in training, grooming and massage therapy to clients. Betsy expands services by offering her expertise in holistic health, nutrition and Reiki for pets.

2010s
Koren Palazzo Spadavecchia appears on the Rachael Ray Show to demonstrate the technique of pet massage with the family’s beloved German Shepherd Basra. Purr’n Pooch celebrates its 40th Anniversary with the creation of the Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals, a grant making 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to providing educational resources to non-profit, no-kill animal rescue groups and organizations from across the United States. Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals hosts the first black tie gala for people and their dogs on the Jersey Shore at the Ocean Place Resort & Spa in Long Branch, NJ.

Renovations were completed in 2012 at the Wall Township location to include a luxury cattery with private cubbies, luxury dog suites, indoor pool and spa, and upgraded playgrounds with canine turf and water parks.

Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals hosts 2nd annual black tie gala at The Berkeley Hotel in Asbury Park, NJ and the first pet-friendly family event at Pier Village Shoppes in Long Branch, NJ.

Purr’n Pooch begins offering aquatic exercise sessions in our indoor spa pool located in Wall. Experienced pet care technicians care and comfort dogs with ease and patience. Swimming, games, and other exercise routines are part of the fun as pups learn to move and play gently in our warm, spa waters. Private sessions are available and the pool setting is calm and quiet, ideal for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals continues to host events and support non-profit animal groups and organizations.  In 2014, the Foundation hosted its 5th annual summer gala at the Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club. The event raised $30,000 to support the lifesaving efforts of nonprofit, no-kill animal rescue organizations from across the NY/NJ region. In addition to the gala, the Foundation partners with several organizations to host fundraising opportunities, holds an annual 5K Canine Classic Run/Walk in October, and organizes a holiday gift drive for U.S. Military Working Dog Teams deployed in the Middle East.
