Basic Dog Training at Purr’n Pooch

Group Dog Training Classes

Puppy Basics: (8 weeks) Now that you’ve acquired that new puppy, you’re probably finding out that you need some professional help when it comes to housebreaking, mouthing, teething, and teaching your puppy the simplest of basic commands. Your puppy will get to play and socialize with other puppies and people, and he or she will learn to focus on you. All you have to do is spend a little bit of time each day, accentuate the positive and be consistent. Our NJ dog trainers are here to help you reach that goal. Puppy Basics covers potty training, nutrition, bite inhibition, and basic obedience including walking nicely on leash, sit, down, stay, come, and leave it/drop it. (For puppies 10 weeks to six months.)

Basic I: (8 weeks) This program is for the adolescent or adult dog that needs basic training. Our NJ dog trainers will teach you how to instruct your dog to sit, down, stay (duration & distance), come, walking nicely on leash, leave it/ drop it, and how to politely greet strangers. We’ll also show you how to cure those annoying bad habits like jumping, mouthing, nipping, barking incessantly, and showing anti-social behavior to other dogs. (For dogs over 6 months of age.)

Basic II: (8 weeks) This is where we take Basic I to the next level. The toughest thing for your dog to learn is that commands must be obeyed, no matter who gives them or what the distraction is. That’s what this program is all about—dealing with distractions. Along with overcoming those pesky interruptions, we teach you about control: how to achieve it, why it’s important to your dog and how to get your dog to want to perform for you. Sit, down, stay, come, and heel are reinforced with tons of distractions and distance. This program is much more intense both physically and mentally to you and your dog, but the results are worth it. (For dogs that have completed Puppy Basics or Basics I, or another approved training program.)

CGC: (8 weeks) Would you like to be able to turn your dog into a therapy dog? Would you like to feel confident that your dog will be a good citizen no matter where you both go or who you might meet? That’s the premise behind the AKC Certificate of Good Citizenship training program. This program concentrates on the 10 exercises required by the AKC for your dog to earn this certification. This certification is also the first step required for any handler seeking to train their dog for therapy work. The ten exercises are real world based and the training is intense. While the work is hard, the reward of this certification upon successful completion of the test is an achievement that you’ll be proud of forever. (For dogs that have completed Basics II, or other approved training program.) Located at 86 Gilbert Street West, Tinton Falls, NJ 07701. Call 732.842.4949 for details.

Agility for Fun: (8 weeks) This is an introduction to the fun-filled world of agility. You’ll be taught how to use the equipment, the commands that your dog must respond to and how to successfully navigate the obstacles and equipment. If your dog has lots of energy and you want to focus that energy, refine his obedience, improve his confidence and have a lot of fun and laughs doing it, then this is the course for you. (For dogs over one year of age that have completed at least Puppy Basics or Basic I.)

Out’n About: (8 weeks) This six-week program is for the handler and dog that have successfully completed a Basics II, CGC or other intermediate or advanced level training program. This program is designed to further ‘proof’ your dog to real-world environments. Our professional NJ dog trainers will choose different places to take the class each week so that you and your dog encounter lots of new people, dogs, distractions, and noises. You’ll walk through crowded downtown streets, visit parks for off-leash work, go into pet-friendly stores, stroll the boardwalk, and maybe even head out to the dog beach! You will be working hard to have your dog perform reliably under new and very off-putting conditions, similar to ones that you may encounter if you want to take your dog with you to special events, street fairs, dog parks, etc.

Individual Classes

Day Care & Training: Leave your dog with us for the day to enjoy any one of our five play yards and the water park (seasonal). Our NJ dog trainers will work one-on-one with your dog to correct any social, obedience or behavioral problems that you’re encountering at home.

Boarding & Training: We offer a 14-day on-site pet boarding program that allows us to train and socialize your dog. The program covers basic commands: sit, down, stay, come, heel, and proper walking on leash. This basic dog training program also teaches your dog correct behaviors such as politely greeting people, sitting politely for petting, etc., and correcting improper behaviors such as jumping, nipping, mouthing, pulling, counter surfing, etc. While boarding with us, your dog will play with other dogs in our closely monitored play yards and receive 20 hours of individual instruction from our professional trainers. Once you pick up your well-trained dog, you’ll receive two in-home follow up sessions so that we can teach you how to continue the training that will make your dog a welcome addition to your family.

Personalized Training

We know that your family’s world can be hectic and you may not be able to attend one of our groups. That’s why our NJ dog trainers can custom design an individualized training program to suit any dog owner’s needs. Whether you’d like your dog to stay with us for a few days or you’d feel more comfortable conducting the training at your home, we can help. Our trainers will come to you at a time and day of your choosing so that you and your family can all be part of this very important training. It also helps dogs that feel more comfortable being trained at a place where they feel safe and secure.

If any of these training programs sound like they’d be a benefit to you and your dog, or if you are having problems or issues that you feel are specific to your dog, please call one of our professional trainers with any questions you might have and let us help.

Out’n About Program

Do you feel confident enough to take your dog for a walk at Pier Village or downtown Red Bank? Are you comfortable enough to take a stroll through Allaire State Park or Hartshorne Woods, or to let your dog off lead at the Manasquan dog beach?

How does he or she react to crowds, loud noises and heavy traffic? What happens when there are other animals or people he/she wouldn’t normally encounter?

The transition from the canine classroom to home and then to the rest of the world can be difficult. Out’n about is a six-week program (1.5 hours each week), focusing on the use of your training learned in the classroom to a different outdoor environment each week. Our professional trainers, Vicky and Sam, work with you to improve your dog-handling techniques and your pet’s public behavior.

We have some cool places we call rally points where we can take a break in dog-friendly atmospheres. There we can discuss and evaluate our dogs’ socialization skills. So let’s walk the streets, have fun and get Out'n about!

Prerequisite: Due to the environments in which we’ll be training, owners and their dogs must have completed a verifiable intermediate, advanced or CGC (AKC Certificate of Good Citizenship) training program course or must be known to Purr’n Pooch trainers to possess the minimum training necessary in order to participate.
