Summer Fun at Purr’n Pooch and Dog-Friendly Events at the Jersey Shore

Summer Fun at Purr'n Pooch and Dog-Friendly Events at the Jersey Shore

The tail-wagging fun has yet to stop this summer! These past few months have been jam-packed with exciting activities and the pups and kitties are loving it – especially the mild temperatures, which have made outdoor playtime even more enjoyable.  We were curious to find out what your pets have been doing all summer long, so we held our “Paws” for Summer Fun Photo Contest from July 21 to August 10. We saw so many adorable pictures of pups lounging by the pool and on the porch; basking in the sun out in the backyard; cooling off in the shady garden; playing with the garden hose, Frisbees and chew toys; and taking a bubble bath to clean up from a long day of outdoor fun. Our furry friends just love to soak up the summer fun!

Summer Fun at Purr'n Pooch and Dog-Friendly Events at the Jersey ShoreWhen your pets are not at home spending fun in the sun with you, they’re enjoying lots of summertime activities with us here at Purr’n Pooch. Splashing and paddling around in our freshwater pools is a favorite for the pups. This summer we added a new and exciting amenity to our Wall location – an indoor pool for aquatic water exercise. It’s already a hit! When it’s time to wind down, the pups relax in the shade on the playground or in our air conditioned suites. They also enjoy playing with KONG® toys filled with frozen peanut butter and treats. The kitties are purrfectly content basking in the sun near the windows and playing on the jungle gym, rock walls and waterfalls. We’ve celebrated quite a few birthdays and other special occasions with private and monthly parties, featuring Jodes Happy Tail yogurt treats for dessert – a sweet treat! On Saturdays, we have our training and agility classes, which take place both indoors and outdoors.

Book your pet’s summer fun with us soon! Our swimming pools are open through mid-September and sometimes longer depending on the weather.  Call us in Tinton Falls at 732.842.4949 or in Wall at 732.528.8100.

Get Running for Your Health and Animal Charity This Fall Season

PNPFA-5K-Run-Blog-Post

Paws down dog owners are more likely to engage in physical activity and stay fit and healthy just by walking or running with their best friends a minimum of 2-3 times a day.

Bringing a dog into your home could also have a host of health benefits from helping to lower blood pressure to beating depression. According to a recent health report from the American Heart Association, owning a dog has also been shown to reduce a person’s risk of a heart attack.

So why not consider bringing home a new friend to help you lead a happier and healthier life?

There are dozens of animal rescue organizations across the country ready to help you find and adopt your best friend and workout buddy.

Before starting any physical fitness routine, visit your veterinarian to make sure that your new up or old friend is up to meeting the physical demands of a high impact walk or run. Once you get the green light from your vet, start an exercise routine with easy strolls and build up to a comfortable, quicker pace that gets both you and your best friend’s hearts pumping. Even a dog that has been with a family for years, but has not been very active will need to be checked out by his vet before burning those calories.

The fun of having a dog as your workout buddy doesn’t stop with its health benefits either. There are plenty of social perks like making time to enjoy the great outdoors and discovering new friends.

Many love matches have also been made when our pets have pulled cupid’s arrow and shot right on target! Purr’n Pooch’s Betsy Palazzo and her husband Chris Dudick met thanks to their shared love of animals, while working together on “Tails” of Love, a joint project of the Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals and Dudick’s children’s production company of Small Factory.

Register for the Purr’n Pooch 5K Canine Run Walk Classic

You can combine your love of staying in shape with your pet by registering for pet-friendly events across the NY/NJ region. These events provide fun venues for getting out with your pup and often raise funds for less fortunate animals and the charities that care for them.

On Sunday, October 6 we invite you and your pup to walk, run and heel for animals at the Purr’n Pooch Foundation’s annual 5K Canine Run Walk Classic at the beautiful oceanfront location of Pier Village in Long Branch, N.J.  The race starts at 8 a.m. and all are welcome to attend. Dogs are required to run or walk on leash.  Pre-register online. Race shirts will be given to all two-legged participants. Cost is $25 per adult and dogs walk or run free. Race is rain or shine.

“We’re looking forward to Purr’n Pooch’s Second Annual 5K Canine Run Walk Classic. It’s a great day seaside at the dog-friendly Pier Village where people and their pups get a running start to benefit animal charities from across NJ and NY,” said Elizabeth Palazzo Dudick, President, Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals. “Getting out to enjoy time with our pups and friends on what we hope will be a beautiful fall morning, is one small step we can take to help unsung heroes who take huge strides daily to help animals in need of love and rescue.”

The Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals awards annual grants to non-profit, no-kill animal welfare organizations to be used for day-to-day operations, emergency relief, spay/neuter efforts, veterinary care, equipment, construction, vehicle purchases, educational programs and special projects. We are able to help support the efforts of the charitable organizations by holding fundraisers such as the race.

In 2013 the Foundation awarded grants to organizations including Operation Kindness, Marine Mammal Stranding Center, Ramapo-Bergen Animal Rescue, Monmouth County SPCA, ReRun Horse Rescue, Mid-Atlantic Bull Dog Rescue and New Life Boxer Rescue.

If you and your four-legged companion aren’t ready to hit the competitive world of racing just yet, you can still join us and have a great time cheering on the participants. You might also get inspired to start hitting the pavement with your pet and begin training for next year’s race!

Smart Feeding Choices are Key to Healthy & Happy Pets

At Purr’n Pooch Pet Resorts we believe that smart feeding choices are key to raising healthy and happy cats and pups. Poor quality and over processed foods can cause a host of issues for your pet, including skin allergies, digestive problems and chronic ear infections. We are pleased to announce that Purr’n Pooch now carries affordable quality food lines for your pet. We also welcome your special order requests.

What to look for in quality pet food:

  • Clearly named protein sources
  • Concentrated meat proteins such as chicken meal or turkey meal
  • Whole grains
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Named fats from quality sources such as chicken fat or sunflower oil
  • Natural preservatives such as mixed tocopherols or vitamins C or E

What  to avoid in pet food:

  • Non specific ingredients such as animal by-products, meat and bone meal
  • Protein fillers such as corn and wheat gluten and egg product meal
  • Unnecessary carbs – refined flours, wheat and mill runs
  • Processed fruits and veggies – tomato pomace and dehydrated potatoes
  • Fats from non-specific sources such as poultry  and animal fat and vegetable oil
  • Artificial preservatives – BHA and BHT

Purr’n Pooch is proud to feature a range of all natural foods, treats and supplements that provide your pet with the essentials for a healthy life.  We currently carry the following food and treat lines:

Cat Grooming Can Be Comfortable for the Most Finicky of Felines

Cats are very sensitive to sound, touch and texture so at Purr’n Pooch we go to great lengths to make sure your kitty is comfortable when being groomed. Cats require different handling than dogs and should be groomed in quiet, calm surroundings.

Purr’n Pooch’s standard spa and grooming services for cats include trimming of the undercoat, shaving rear areas of fur, trimming nails and pad hair, baths and ear cleaning. It’s very important to get your cat accustomed to grooming early, especially if he or she is a long haired breed.

Tips for Grooming Your Cat at Home

Here are some tips for grooming your cat at home that, with patience and time, can make the process as easy as 1-2-3:

  1. Create a tranquil area to bathe your cat, free of loud sound and activity. The sound of running water is very soothing, which is why Purr’n Pooch’s Owner Dick Palazzo designed and installed a 22-foot indoor waterfall and rock wall for our feline guests to enjoy in our custom-designed cattery.
  2. Cats need to firmly grip a surface with their paws and claws to feel secure when bathing so make sure to place your cat on a towel, carpet or yoga mat. Tubs and stainless steel surfaces are slippery and create a sense of insecurity for cats causing them to tense up during bathing.
  3. In order to create a peaceful environment to bathe your cat, Purr’n Pooch recommends giving him/her a sponge bath by using a feline-friendly shampoo. Massage the shampoo into his/her coat and then gently towel dry the fur. Make sure to hold and rub your cat through the process to ensure a relaxing experience.

HARLEY’S ON GOOD BEHAVIOR WITH POSITIVE TRAINING AT PURR’N POOCH

“Firm, but gentle. Demanding, but passionate. Sincere…”

If we were asked to describe Iuliana, the trainer we selected for our 11 month, work-in-progress, rescue named Harley, then these are the first thoughts that come to mind.

We were very fortunate to have a friend recommend Dick Palazzo, owner of Purr’n Pooch as a contact for someone to train our boxer “beast”. After describing Harley to him, he said “I have just the right trainer for you. Her name is Iuliana”. We spent our first hour at Purr’n Pooch in an upstairs training area with Harley and Iuli. We were horrified at how ill-mannered he was. Yet Iuli just stayed totally calm. She showed us how to discourage his aggressive behavior staying tranquil and rewarding him for doing well. Never once did she try to restrain him or raise her voice. We just sat there with our mouths agape. (Maybe there is hope).

Fast forward two months…he’s still a work-in-progress, but is so much more obedient. Iuli comes to our house and works with him – again reinforcing the positive with encouragement and treats. As we all agree, he’s very smart. He remembers commands. He keeps eye contact when training. But he’s still young and headstrong. But we’re sure he’s going to be a very special guy.

After each session Iuli send us summary reports and further training suggestions.
We will continue to work with Iuli and strongly recommend her skills and demeanor as a trainer extraordinaire.

About the Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals

Too often we hear about the millions of unwanted animals killed in shelters across America each year or read about unfathomable cruelty inflicted on defenseless creatures. Fortunately, there are selfless, passionate individuals quietly saving lives – hands-on, one animal at a time.

With pure hearts, boundless energy and few resources, they work diligently day in and day out, to rescue animals in distress, heal their wounds, restore their confidence, and teach them to trust and love again.

The Purr’n Pooch Foundation is committed to helping these unsung heroes pursue their worthy missions. Regardless of species served, the Foundation supports those deserving organizations who do so much with so little.
