A Summer of Love for Animal Charity

Summertime at Purr'n Pooch - A Summer of Love for Animal Charity

Summer is a special time at Purr’n Pooch Pet Resorts. We enjoy seeing many familiar faces in our daycare and boarding and making new friends who love their family pets as much as we do. For more than 40 years, the Palazzo family has been committed to providing Jersey Shore residents and visitors with the very best in luxury pet care, training, grooming and more. When we’re not pampering your pups and cats with birthday parties and strawberry baths, we’re helping animals not as fortunate through the Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals.

In 2010, Dick and Mary Palazzo’s daughters Koren and Betsy founded the Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals to honor their parents’ incredible life’s accomplishment – a celebration of 40 years in the pet industry. Their gift continues to keep giving and to date grants totaling more than $55,000 have been awarded to nonprofit animal rescue organizations from across the NY/NJ region. Our nonprofit grantees help all kinds of life from stranded seals off the Jersey Shore to canine police dogs protecting communities across NJ. There are many groups, large and small, in need of help and we’re honored to lend a paw in their time of need.

Past grantees include the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, Operation Kindness, Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, All FUR Love Animal Rescue, Monmouth County SPCA, Re Run NJ, Mid Atlantic Bull Dog Rescue, New Life Boxer Rescue, Cat Assistance Network, Greyhound Friends of NJ, Project Animal Worldwide, Special Needs K9, St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, and Wag On Inn Rescue.

The Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals is run by a volunteer board of veterinarians, pet industry experts, media professionals and others whose work is made possible thanks to the generous support and passion of Purr’n Pooch’s employees, clients and vendors.

You’ve donated food and pet supplies to help families and organizations during Superstorm Sandy; you’ve dressed your best to raise donations for animal charities at our annual “Black Tails Gala”; you’ve shared our “Tails of Love” animations educating children on pet adoption; and you’ve participated in fundraisers from Kissing Booths to pictures with Santa Paws. It’s pawesome to look back on all the fun we’ve had over the last few years! Thank you for your part in making the Foundation such a great success.

Purr’n Pooch Foundation grants are awarded to non-profit, no-kill animal welfare organizations to be used for day-to-day operations, emergency relief, spay/neuter efforts, veterinary care, equipment, construction, vehicle purchases, educational programs and special projects. More details are available on our website. Please share the grant application with a charity that you think may need our support.

Please also make sure to join us for our upcoming “furstivities” and let’s share our love for animals by raising funds for charities in need of assistance.

Purr’n Pooch Picks for 2013 Trends in Pet Care

Pets-Are-Family-Post

Palazzo Family

Industry experts are saying that the pet care industry is “recession proof” and, as you may have noticed, pet resorts are popping up across the country. Though a burgeoning business, Purr’n Pooch President and CEO Dick Palazzo cautions pet owners of new companies with little or no experience in handling and caring for pets. Experience and expertise will be key to long-term success in this growing industry.

Curious about how Purr’n Pooch has stayed in business since 1970? All you have to do is hear from the key people who have contributed to our success. Here are the Palazzo Family’s picks for trends in pet care and how they will be accommodating their clients’ needs in 2013.

Pets Are Family

The biggest trends in pet care are really dictated by the underlying shift in how owners view their pets. Thirty years ago people certainly loved their pets, but they were just that, pets. As time has passed, the paradigm has shifted to people looking at their pets less like animals and more like family members.  The majority of pet owners want the absolute best for their pets, pampering included. At Purr’n Pooch we do our best to anticipate the needs and wants of our clients. Nothing says you love your pet like a 30-minute massage, strawberry bath and twilight walk. Mary Palazzo, Vice President

Aging Gracefully

Senior pet care is on the rise. As veterinary medicine has advanced and better nutrition and wellness products have been developed, people have become generally more willing to go the extra mile for their pets. We are seeing an increase in longevity as many of our dogs have been visiting us for boarding and daycare for more than ten years. This type of specialized care does present new challenges as the needs of each geriatric pet can vary greatly, but we do everything possible to provide the most comfortable and stress -free environment for them. Personalized care is the hallmark of our guest services for aging pets. It’s also a service dear to my heart as I’ve cared for several of my own senior dogs throughout the years at Purr’n Pooch. Dick Palazzo, President & CEO

Natural Products & Relaxation

At Purr’n Pooch, we have certainly made a push to offer a wider array of all natural or organic pet supplies to our customers and guests. Many of our shampoos and conditioners are 100% all natural, plant based and free of chemical detergents. Stress is also a large health factor in humans as well as pets. We go to great lengths to provide a relaxing environment for the pets with classical spa music played throughout our facilities. We also provide a natural pathway to relaxation through our spa services, which include massage therapy, reiki and group activities such as doga (yoga with your dog)Betsy Palazzo Dudick

Doggie Daycare

Doggie daycare continues to be on the rise. Many families work long hours and don’t want their dog(s) to be home alone. Some simply want their dog(s) to mingle, socialize and enjoy a good time. There are many reasons people bring their dogs to daycare, but the common thread among our clients is the love they share for their pets and their desire to do what’s best for them.  Koren Palazzo Spadavecchia

All in all, pet care services are on the rise in 2013 and at Purr’n Pooch we’re poised to continue to be the best option for pet owners visiting or living on the Jersey Shore. According to Embrace Pet Insurance, a member of the North American Pet Health Insurance Association, no time in history has seen such a wide and growing variety of products and services for pet parents and their pets.

Purr’n Pooch’s diverse menu of services reflects the growing general consensus that pets are indeed a substantial part of the family now. But, you knew that already didn’t you?

Creative Grooming with Jenn Dios

Groomer Jenn Dios with Honey Bee

Creative Grooming is a form of creative expression in which the animal is the canvas. For some groomers it’s a touch of elegance. For others, it’s a drastic transformation. It may involve bright and bold colors, softer pastels, or even no color at all.

This Halloween let Purr’n Pooch transform your pup into any any one of a dozen of exciting characters from a football fan sporting the logo of his or her favorite sports team to a cute, cuddly panda bear. Let’s have fun and be creative!

Dying a pet is very similar to leaving in a conditioner. Jenn Dios, Purr’n Pooch’s Creative Grooming Spa Professional, washes your pet with a good quality shampoo, rinses, then adds dye to the desired area where it sets for 15 minutes then is rinsed. Jenn only recommends using dye on a pet that has not had any skin issues and is not sensitive to skin allergies. On a dog or cat, 12 weeks or older, with a healthy skin and coat it should not cause any irritation. Coloring results may vary with your dog’s coat type and breed. A consultation visit is requested prior to your pet’s creative grooming appointment to ensure that your pet has a healthy coat and his or her skin is in good health.

As beautiful as the grooms may be, the animal’s comfort should never be sacrificed for the sake of a groom. It is also important to note that creative grooming is only to be performed by professional groomers, knowledgeable in both basic grooming and creative grooming techniques. While the animals are not harmed during these grooms, there are many different factors that must be understood and taken into account. For this reason, pet owners should not attempt to achieve a creative groom on their own. If you are interested in having something extra done for your pet, talk to your groomer about what options are available for you and your pet.

Contact us at 732-842-4949 in Tinton Falls or 732-528-8100 in Wall to reserve your pet’s appointment. Visit this link for directions.

Smart Feeding Choices are Key to Healthy & Happy Pets

At Purr’n Pooch Pet Resorts we believe that smart feeding choices are key to raising healthy and happy cats and pups. Poor quality and over processed foods can cause a host of issues for your pet, including skin allergies, digestive problems and chronic ear infections. We are pleased to announce that Purr’n Pooch now carries affordable quality food lines for your pet. We also welcome your special order requests.

What to look for in quality pet food:

  • Clearly named protein sources
  • Concentrated meat proteins such as chicken meal or turkey meal
  • Whole grains
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Named fats from quality sources such as chicken fat or sunflower oil
  • Natural preservatives such as mixed tocopherols or vitamins C or E

What  to avoid in pet food:

  • Non specific ingredients such as animal by-products, meat and bone meal
  • Protein fillers such as corn and wheat gluten and egg product meal
  • Unnecessary carbs – refined flours, wheat and mill runs
  • Processed fruits and veggies – tomato pomace and dehydrated potatoes
