Aquatic Exercise and Swimming Helps Dogs Build Strength, Confidence

aquatic exercise

As humans, when we injure ourselves we are able to go to therapy to help strengthen our muscles and get back to our healthiest self. But what happens when a dog needs to heal after an injury or surgery?

At Purr’n Pooch, the answer to getting dogs back to their frolicking selves is often aquatic exercise sessions in our indoor pool located in Wall, NJ. Experienced and patient pet care technicians work with dogs, teaching them to move and play gently in the warm water. Aquatic exercise is great for dogs who need hydro sessions after an injury. The spa waters strengthen and gently condition muscles, preventing further injury and lessening pain.

Kylie Ann, a Golden Retriever, was just six years old when she ruptured her Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) and meniscus in her right knee and needed surgery. Her recovery was slow and restrictive, leading to weight and muscle mass loss and weakness. Kylie Ann was unable to play with her younger doggie brother, Casey, and became depressed.

This worried her owner, Kristin, but what also concerned her was the likelihood of the same injury happening to her other knee.

“After talking it over with her veterinarian, I decided to try Purr’n Pooch’s water sessions in order to help her physical rehabilitation after the surgery and mental well-being after being restricted and confined for weeks,” said Kristin. “I thought the general physical fitness and conditioning would help prevent the possibility of her rupturing the opposite knee in the future.”

Kylie Ann started work with Nick, aquatic director at Purr’n Pooch’s Wall location, in June 2014. Kylie had never been a big fan of the water and was fearful of new situations and new people, but she already knew and trusted Nick. Turns out, it was a perfect fit.

Kylie had early and continued success with her aquatic exercise sessions at Purr’n Pooch, which Kristin attributes to the type of personalized services offered.

“The sessions are one-on-one, ensuring individualized attention,” said Kristin. “They are conducted in an actual pool where the dog and human work together as a team in the water, allowing for a very unique and positive bonding experience.”

Kristin also attributes Kylie’s success to Nick, the pup’s beloved technician.

“Simply put, Nick is the reason Kylie Ann is healthier, happier, stronger and more confident dog today,” said Kristin. “He’s the best!

Kylie Ann was expected to have a slight limp after her surgery, but after three months of working with Nick in the pool, she not only recovered from surgery faster than expected, but she also had no evidence of a limp.

“She’s in the best condition of her life,” said Kristin. ‘Kylie Ann’s physical and emotional transformation were remarkable.”

In fact, Kylie Ann’s progress was so impressive, Kristin decided to bring her brother Casey, a one and a half mixed pup, to Purr’n Pooch’s Hydro Fun sessions. Casey, a pup rescued from a high-kill shelter, is sensitive and wary of other dogs. But with Nick’s help, Casey is benefiting from this engaging and enriching activity just like sis.

Casey started the sessions unable to swim. Now, the pup is learning to surf. Nick uses a surfboard with Casey, encouraging balance and coordination.

“Besides building confidence and being incredibly fun, the bonding, healthy exercise, reduction in stress, teaching of relaxation and increased body awareness and endurance has just been remarkably beneficial for Casey,” said Kristin. “Casey’s trusting and special relationship with Nick, coupled with his patience and compassion with Casey, has enabled my fearful little dog to relax more, increasing his self-confidence in and out of the water; simply above and beyond any of my expectations.”

Kylie Ann continues to work with Nick in the pool and build her strength and maintain a healthy weight. The objective now is to prevent another injury from happening and keeping Kylie Ann motivated and happy.

“I’m not sure there is anything that brings her as much joy and happiness as her weekly pool time with Nick,” said Kristin. “What a special bond they now share.”

Purr’n Pooch offers aquatic exercise sessions in our indoor spa pool located in Wall, NJ. Our experienced pet care instructors will care and comfort your dog with ease and patience. Swimming, games, and other exercise routines are part of the fun as your friend learns to move and play gently in our warm, spa waters. Private sessions are available and the pool setting is calm and quiet – ideal for relaxation and rejuvenation. Click here for more information.

Oodles of Doodles in Dog Daycare

Oodles of Doodles at Purr'n Pooch Pet Resorts

What do you get when you mix a poodle with a Labrador retriever? Or an Australian Shepherd? Or a Schnauzer? Or a Wheaten Terrier? Why, oodles of doodles of course!

Doodle dogs are quickly becoming America’s favorite family pet. At Purr’n Pooch, we are seeing the number of doodle mixes staying and playing with us on the rise and their owners are head over heels with their fun loving personality and coat. Doodle dogs are hybrids, a mix between a Poodle and another dog breed, like a Lab (Labradoodle), a Schnauzer (Schnoodle), or a Wheaten Terrier (Whoodle).

“The doodle comes from a poodle, either standard or mini, and wide variety of other breeds with different coat textures,” said Jennifer Connors, an employee of Purr’n Pooch for more than 20 years. “The combination really brings out the best traits in both breeds.”

Like so many mix breed dogs, hybrids like doodles used to fill animal shelters waiting to be adopted. Now they’re all the rage, partly because of a poodle’s non-shedding and allergy-friendly hair.

Kendall Petschauer and her family sought out a doodle hybrid for their hypoallergenic benefits and found Sebastian, mix between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, or a Goldendoodle. Sebastian, named after the University of Miami mascot, is two years old and likes to keep his family on their toes.

“Sebastian is so intelligent and can easily outsmart us,” said Kendall. “He hides things in closets and drawers, which he can open with his nose. He turns it into a game.”

Kathy Smith and her family found their forever friend in a Whoodle named Woodward, or Woody for short. Her three kids picked Woody because he was cute, but the family soon discovered the health benefits of doodles.

“He doesn’t shed,” said Kathy. “It makes cleaning the house so much easier and is nice when we have guests who have allergies.”

Another benefit of doodle hybrids? Mixing dog breeds can weed out inherited genetic problems that can affect purebred pups, making mixed dogs healthier. Hybrid dogs tend to have much more moderate personalities and fit well in households with children.

“Sebastian is so playful and full of energy,” said Kathy. “He loves to jump and spin when he sees you, even if you just leave the room for one minute and come back in. It’s like it’s the first time he’s seen you in forever!”

Matt Fischer and his wife found their furry doodle in Ruby, a one-year-old Sheepadoodle. Sixty-pound Ruby is a hybrid between an Old English Sheep Dog and a Poodle, and as loyal as any guard dog.

Doodles come in all shapes and sizes, which makes them the perfect pup for any lifestyle. Purr’n Pooch sees all types of doodle dogs, including Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, Sheepdoodles, Whoodles, and even St. Bernard Doodles.

“Purr’n Pooch is a great place for doodles because they tend to have a lot of energy and are extremely smart and need the stimulation,” said Jennifer. “Doodles love daycare, agility, scent work, and puzzles.”

Sebastian was trained at Purr’n Pooch when he was just a young pup, where he learned how to sit, come, walk on a leash and socialize with other dogs. Kendall says the training was a huge reason why Sebastian is such a well-behaved pup.

“They take such good care of him when he’s there,” said Kendall. “He has so much energy that it’s almost impossible to tire him out, but at Purr’n Pooch he gets all the exercise he needs.”

Woody loves Purr’n Pooch so much that he knows exactly when he’s headed to play with his puppy friends, and will sit calmly in anticipation until he arrives.

“He’s greeted so warmly by the staff,” said Kathy. “Once he’s there he just plays and we never worry about him.”

Even young pup Ruby plays with her furry friends so much during her stays at Purr’n Pooch that she comes home exhausted and ready for bed.

“My wife and I work all day and we don’t want to keep her in a crate,” said Matt. “We know at Purr’n Pooch she’ll get the love and care she needs. Animals definitely come first there and the entire staff really cares about our pets.”

These smart, loyal and lovable pups are sure to be popular among dog lover for years. Doodles are here to stay, and Purr’n Pooch looks forward to welcoming oodles of doodles as well as all types of dogs to our pet resort family.

NJ Betsy’s Law a Step Forward for Pets but More Change Needed

Betsy's Law should be amended to require 24-hour supervision at all animal care facilities

“Anyone that takes on the responsibility of caring for pets should take on the responsibility of caring for them in a responsible way.”

Betsy the Rottweiler was still a pup, just 16 months old when she accidentally hung herself in a kennel at a veterinarian’s office. Betsy had gone in for routine eye surgery and was recovering when the incident happened. Her owner, Madeleine Kayser, was told that her beloved dog would need to recover from her surgery and that she would need overnight care. Betsy was wearing an unbreakable collar and hung herself. Kayser worked for eight years to get a protective law signed in the state of New Jersey mandating that veterinary offices and animal hospitals post if they do not offer 24-hour supervision. The law, known as Betsy’s Law, was signed into law September 15. (Story here from CBS New York)

Dick Palazzo, owner of Purr’n Pooch Pet Resorts with 45 years experience in the pet care industry, feels the newly signed Betsy’s Law is a good start, but the law should take pet care a step further. Dick believes that any animal care facility (veterinary and animal hospitals, boarding and kennel facilities, pet sitters) should be required to provide 24-hour supervision of animals.

“The unforeseen can happen, and there needs to be someone there who can handle an emergency situation,” said Dick. “To provide proper care, we in the pet care industry have a responsibility to stand up for these pets who can’t stand up for themselves.”

According to Kayser, 90 percent of vet offices and animal hospitals in New Jersey do not have 24-hour care. Dick backs this statistic up, saying that very few pet care facilities offer 24-hour supervision for pets staying overnight.

“You wouldn’t leave your small child alone, so why are we allowing our pets to be left alone for 12 hours?” said Dick. “Especially after a surgery or a procedure that requires monitoring. Anyone that takes on the responsibility of caring for pets should take on the responsibility of caring for them in a professional way.”

Dick believes that when it comes to the care of our beloved pets, the best and most competent practice is 24-hour care, whether the location is a hospital, boarding facility, or pet sitter service. Purr’n Pooch provides staff on-site 24 hours a day to care for any pets staying overnight in both his Tinton Falls and Wall pet resorts.

“We recognize that different pets have different reactions to situations,” says Dick. “A dog may be terrified of a thunderstorm and our staff is trained to recognize the signs of distress and can handle the situation accordingly. If there’s no one there to witness distress, no care can be given.”

Dick believes that Betsy’s Law is a good start in informing the public of the issues that can occur at pet care facilities, but that a stricter and more specific law is needed. He commends the work that Kayser and the Lt. Gov. have done to move toward better and safer care for pets.

“As pet care providers, it is our responsibility to give our pets the best, most thorough care possible,” said Dick. “And this requires 24-hour supervision.”

If you feel the same, please consider writing your local elected officials.

Fun in the Sun with Your Pets in Monmouth County

At Purr’n Pooch, we know that summer is a busy time for pets and people alike. When your pets are not at home having fun in the sun with you, they’re enjoying the long list of summer activities here at Purr’n Pooch.

The freshwater pools let pets splash and play while staying cool, and the indoor pool at our Wall location lets your pet get aquatic exercise. After a long day of swimming, pups can relax in the shade at our playground or in the air-conditioned suites.

KONG® toys are also a big hit in the hot summer months with the pooches, especially when we fill them with frozen peanut butter and other treats! And the kitties are happily snoozing in the sun near the windows and playing on the jungle gym, rock walls and waterfalls.

Purr’n Pooch always celebrates birthdays and other special occasions with private and monthly parties, featuring Jodes Happy Tail yogurt treats for dessert! Pets that come in for daycare on Tuesdays can participate in Play ‘N Games –  fun activities centered around agility, puzzles, and scent work. There is an additional $35 fee for this service. And on Saturdays, we have our agility classes, which take place both inside and out.
