Celebrating Pit Bull Awareness Month

Celebrating Pit Bull Awareness Month

The month of October is designated as Pit Bull Awareness Month, a time to bring positive awareness and attention to the American Pit Bull Terrier. During this month, we also celebrate National Pit Bull Awareness Day, a day of appreciation and education designed to change perceptions and stereotypes about pit bulls and their responsible owners. This year, National Pit Bull Awareness Day falls on Saturday, October 25th.

Pit bulls are commonly misunderstood for being dangerous, vicious and untrustworthy; however, that is just not the case. It is extremely important that we take this time to educate people on the truth about this incredible breed of dog and work towards clearing up any misunderstanding. People hear myths and stories in the news about pit bulls and make assumptions, but the reality is that if there is ever an issue involving a pit bull, the problem is not because of the breed –it’s because of the human.

Unfortunately, there are irresponsible owners who train pit bulls to fight in order to make a profit and provide so-called “entertainment”. In many cases, those dogs who cannot go on are abandoned or abused by their owners. But pit bulls are not inherently dangerous. Just like other dogs, they can become violent and aggressive through a lack of training, abuse, neglect and irresponsible ownership and breeding, as well as a lack of attention to health and temperament issues. If they are treated with respect, properly trained and cared for, pit bulls will not exhibit these negative traits.

All dogs, including pit bulls, are individuals and no one deserves to be judged based on a stereotype. Through education and compassion, we can work to bring about a positive change for these incredible dogs.

To celebrate Pit Bull Awareness Month, we’re sharing stories about some of our wonderful pit bull friends we’ve had the pleasure of spending time with at Purr’n Pooch’s doggie daycare.

MEET JAX

Celebrating Pit Bull Awareness MonthJax, a five year old pit bull, is the pup of Purr’n Pooch’s Betsy Palazzo Dudick, who adopted him in 2011 after he was found roaming the streets of Hoboken, not chipped and malnourished. They found each other after Betsy appeared as a guest on Tracie Hotchner’s pet talk radio show to talk about the family business. Hotchner just knew Jax was a good fit for Betsy, who would be able to give him the appropriate care and training. Today Jax is the proud brother of a one-year old baby named Milana and a gorgeous black kitty named Maggie.

MEET HAZEL

Celebrating Pit Bull Awareness MonthHazel was welcomed into her loving family at 5 months old after being passed around from house to house and ultimately living out of a car on fast food. Her human brother Ryan rescued her from her unfortunate situation in May 2009. Never having a dog before, Hazel’s family was a bit reluctant to take her in, especially after hearing the myths of how dangerous pit bulls could be. But after a few weeks of time spent with her, they fell in love and she is now a huge part of their family. Hazel is a loyal sweetheart, and loves going for walks, chasing bunnies, chewing Chuckit!® balls and spending time with her friends at Purr‘n Pooch.

MEET STELLA

Celebrating Pit Bull Awareness MonthStella, a 2 year old pit bull, is the biggest love bug. She was taken in as a stray by the Humane Society and adopted by her forever family at 7 months old. She is friendly with both dogs and children. She loves everyone she meets and is full of energy; we must say she’s a big fan of our playground!

At night, she cuddles up in bed with her 5 year old human brother Shane, also her best buddy. Don’t let her size fool you –even though she is 57 pounds she will still try to snuggle up on your lap!

MEET STAR

Celebrating Pit Bull Awareness MonthBefore Star found her forever home she was left abandoned in an apartment with another dog. She had a crossed eye, which was probably a result of poor nutrition. At the time she was adopted, she loved dogs but was scared of people. Her family wanted her to continue playing with other dogs, so we agreed to slowly ease her into daycare at Purr’n Pooch, limiting her contact with unfamiliar people. Now she has lots of friends! Star loves squeaky balls, going for walks and cuddling. At home, Star is a funny girl who makes her family laugh every day. According to her family, she is such a joy to be around and they’re glad they’ve gotten to spend time with her.

No matter your dog’s breed, the experience of the pet boarding and daycare staff you choose is key to your dog having a fun, safe experience while in their care. Read Dick Palazzo’s blog on the 4 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Daycare Facility for more on the topic.

Call us in Tinton Falls at 732-842-4949 or Wall at 732-528-8100 to learn more about our daycare and training services.

Dogs Cool Down and Stay Fit at Purr’n Pooch’s Water Parks

PNP-June-Poool-Blog-Post

It’s summer and you’re excited to the hit the water for a much anticipated swim. Winter has really taken a toll on us, including the dogs. When heading out the door, towel and sunblock in hand, you probably get that sad, perplexed look from your pup that says, “Come on. Take me too!”. Sound familiar?

We love the sun-sational days of summer and agree with your dog. You don’t have to leave your best friend behind while you hit the pool or beach to relish in another gorgeous weekend on the Jersey Shore. Stop feeling guilty and check out your local pet care facility for water activities that will accommodate your best friend.

At Purr’n Pooch our boarding and daycare dogs get to play and swim in our supervised outdoor and indoor water parks. We offer several freshwater pools and water elements like fountains and waterfalls for their enjoyment.

Water activities are not only a source of entertainment for your dog, but they also offer real health benefits. They help your pup to cool off, socialize, get in a cardio vascular workout, and enjoy a good night’s sleep. And, best of all, dogs of all ages from puppies to seniors can enjoy swimming as a healthy, low impact body workout. So while you’re oceanside this summer, register your pup for some watery fun with friends poolside.

A word from our friend Mickey’s mom about his summer fun at PNP…

“Mickey loves to play in the Purr’n Pooch pool. I say, “Mickey do you want to go to the pool club?” and he jumps in the car. When Mickey comes home, he is tired but still makes sure to tell me all bout his day. He actually makes cute barking noises like he is explaining who he has played with and what he did! He goes twice a week and enjoys his dips in the pool and time playing with friends.” Kathy Hader

4 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Dog Daycare

4 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Dog Daycare
I’ve enjoyed working with dogs and cats for more than 40 years at Purr’n Pooch Pet Resorts in Tinton Falls and Wall, NJ. Our family-owned and operated facilities are run by an extraordinary team of 70 pet care professionals, many of whom have been with us for more than 30 years.

Although dog daycares weren’t popular until the 1990s, it was during the early 1970s when I invested my time and love for pets into our Tinton Falls and Wall facilities. I would open the doors to allow our boarding dogs to enjoy leash-free, group play in the halls and yards. Animal behavior was a young science then, and many colleagues questioned why I would take such huge risks with the animals. Today, I am proud to see that dog daycare has become a service widely accessible across the country.

Dog daycare continues to be on the rise. Many families work long hours and don’t want their dogs to be home alone. Some simply want their dogs to socialize and enjoy a good time. There are many reasons people bring their dogs to daycare, but the common thread among our clients is the love they share for their pets and their desire to do what’s best for them.

At Purr’n Pooch, we offer 45 different play areas, transitional groups, and even programs for pets with special needs. By having these spaces and specialized services, our dogs can play and enjoy themselves in the proper, supervised environments.

Pet owners should understand however that not only do the accommodations matter when leaving a pet with a daycare facility, but staff experience is key to successful socialization and a happy visit.

It’s important that you inquire about the credentials of the establishment before leaving your dog in its care. A pet care professional with many years of experience assessing animal behavior should evaluate the potential daycare client. Always ask if the employee evaluating your pet has the proper credentials to diagnose your companion’s behavior. Some questions to ask include:

1. Will you evaluate my dog’s personality as well as its breed and size?

The personality, behavior and size of your dog should all be evlauated, not just your dog’s breed and size. Like children, dogs have their own individual personalities and tend to gravitate to certain people and dogs during the socialization process. Knowing more about your dog will make it possible for the daycare to place it in a group that works best for its temperament.

2. Will my dog be supervised at all times?

Your pet’s caregiver needs to instill boundaries and supervise situations when your dog is at play in any group setting. Be sure to inquire about daycare security and supervision, as they are equally important factors when choosing a facility.

3. Will my dog play in a group right away?

Your dog should be introduced slowly to its new environment, comfortably introducing a circle of friends and becoming familiar with the surroundings on his or her own time. Some dogs require more time than others to develop the confidence necessary to socialize in groups. This type of introduction takes patience, understanding, and, above all, an investment in employee training and workplace safety practices. And, many dogs may benefit more by being placed in a daycare with human versus dog contact. This environment will exist at a facility willing to work with your pet.

4. What type of surface will my dog play on?

In my professional opinion, the safest and most hygenic surface is astro turf developed specifically for canines. Digging in the dirt, jumping in muddy puddles, and roaming through the grass are all favorite pup pastimes, but your dog’s daycare facility should make sure that your pets still enjoy themselves without potential health hazards. The fuss of daily baths and pesticides could irritate a pet’s skin and fleas, ticks and bacteria can lurk in grass and dirt. At Purr’n Pooch, we outfit our play areas with environmentally friendly turf, which has a knitted backing that provides immediate drainage, so any liquid will wash away automatically, and its soft surface is durable yet gives our guests a comfortable, safe and clean experience while playing outdoors.

No two pets are alike and I take pride in celebrating their uniqueness. Why set dogs up to fail with a daycare that is not accurately assessing their needs or providing the ideal environment for play from the very start? Visit us in Wall or Tinton Falls to see if daycare is a fit for your best friend.

Pet Safety During the Holidays

Pet Safety During the Holidays -Tips from Purr'n Pooch

For many families, it can be easy to overlook the needs of our pets once the chaos of planning and parties arrives, so we hope you find our tips helpful for staying safe throughout the season. Pet owners can maintain a sense of calm around the home by staying on schedule for feeding times, sleep, exercise and play. Pets can also sense when we are anxious so keeping to their regular routine is key to giving them the reassurance they seek during any new, unfamiliar activity. Whether you’re entertaining at home or traveling for the holidays, you’ll want to avoid some of the dangers that may have you “paws” for alarm instead of enjoying time together as a family.

Beware of the Dangers to Pets During the Holidays

It is the most wonderful time of the year … or is it? While the holidays are a great time to get together with family and friends, the season is also a time of stressful hustle and bustle.  From decorations and parties to holiday travel, November through New Year’s can be a time of big change that tend to turn our pet’s world upside down. For four-legged friends that aren’t used to visitors, holiday gatherings can cause them to become over excited and before you know it your mild mannered pet can turn into a jumping, barking, food grabbing dog. Try introducing your pet to the idea of entertaining by hosting small get-togethers to work on his party manners before the big holiday bash. If your pet still isn’t Mr. Petiquette by party day be sure to set up a safe and peaceful space for him away from the noise and commotion of the holiday gathering complete with water, toys, treats and a bed.

During the holidays, homes also fill with the enticing aromas that come from baking cookies and pies to roasting turkeys. These temptations are hard to resist for anyone, man or pup. While for us the biggest problem might be buttoning our pants after feasting, the repercussions are far more dangerous for our four-legged friends. Veterinarians report higher cases of toxicity during the winter, the result of getting into dangers like baker’s chocolate, artificial sweeteners , table scraps and bones. Keep these dangerous ingredients far from sight and smell and make sure that your guests especially children know not to slip your dog tasty morsels under the holiday table.

For many the holidays aren’t complete until all of the trimmings are displayed around the house. Much of your pretty, shiny decor however attracts cats and dogs and they can suffer injuries such as cuts in their mouths to intestinal blockages from swallowing decorations. Candles and twinkling holiday lights can also cause cause serious dangers. For pets that like to chew, electrical shock can result from gnawing on light wires that run along the floor, tree and windows. Candles should be placed in hard to reach areas as well so that curious pets cannot reach them causing burns or a fire. There are also many toxic holiday plants, which can lead to diarrhea, vomiting, oral irritations, and even death. The most common plants to avoid are holly, mistletoe, poinsettias, and pine needles. Even the single leaf from a lily plant can be lethal to cats.

Holiday Travel Safety for Pets

Many people will take to the highways during the holidays traveling to visit family and friends and often with their pets, which can bring about a whole new set of dangers to consider. Preparation is key to keeping your pet safe and enjoying the open road. Make sure he travels in the car in a crate, microchipped and wearing i.d. tags so that he is protected and found in case of an accident or unexpected car door opening. Don’t forget to pack your pet’s favorite toys, blanket and his regular food. If your pet does not travel well, it’s best to have him stay at a boarding facility that you trust to supervise him 24-hours a day with plenty of exercise and TLC. You’ll rest better knowing he is safe and secure while you travel. If you’re considering a stay at Purr’n Pooch Pet Resorts, reserve your pet’s visit now as our cattery and dog suites book quickly. Our grooming and spa appointments also need reservations.

Once all of the hustle and bustle has calmed down you and your pet can get back to life as normal. Keep in mind that the holidays may be stressful, but they also offer rare opportunities to spend time quality time with your pets. So enjoy those longer walks and extra cuddle time on the couch.

From all of us at Purr’n Pooch Pet Resorts, enjoy a safe and jolly time together.

Creative Grooming with Jenn Dios

Groomer Jenn Dios with Honey Bee

Creative Grooming is a form of creative expression in which the animal is the canvas. For some groomers it’s a touch of elegance. For others, it’s a drastic transformation. It may involve bright and bold colors, softer pastels, or even no color at all.

This Halloween let Purr’n Pooch transform your pup into any any one of a dozen of exciting characters from a football fan sporting the logo of his or her favorite sports team to a cute, cuddly panda bear. Let’s have fun and be creative!

Dying a pet is very similar to leaving in a conditioner. Jenn Dios, Purr’n Pooch’s Creative Grooming Spa Professional, washes your pet with a good quality shampoo, rinses, then adds dye to the desired area where it sets for 15 minutes then is rinsed. Jenn only recommends using dye on a pet that has not had any skin issues and is not sensitive to skin allergies. On a dog or cat, 12 weeks or older, with a healthy skin and coat it should not cause any irritation. Coloring results may vary with your dog’s coat type and breed. A consultation visit is requested prior to your pet’s creative grooming appointment to ensure that your pet has a healthy coat and his or her skin is in good health.

As beautiful as the grooms may be, the animal’s comfort should never be sacrificed for the sake of a groom. It is also important to note that creative grooming is only to be performed by professional groomers, knowledgeable in both basic grooming and creative grooming techniques. While the animals are not harmed during these grooms, there are many different factors that must be understood and taken into account. For this reason, pet owners should not attempt to achieve a creative groom on their own. If you are interested in having something extra done for your pet, talk to your groomer about what options are available for you and your pet.

Contact us at 732-842-4949 in Tinton Falls or 732-528-8100 in Wall to reserve your pet’s appointment. Visit this link for directions.
