Congratulations on Your New Puppy! What’s Next?

Layla, after a so-chic continental clip by her Purr’n Pooch groomer, Lynda.

Last month we blogged about “Puppy Love” and how the right daycare experience can be good for your puppy love’s social development. We know that many of us welcome new puppies during the holidays or in the spring and we want to encourage everyone with a new puppy to get off to the best start possible in their new life together. This includes good health and hygiene as well as good social development.

In addition to frequent and appropriate socialization experiences, good grooming, nutrition and basic commands training are all essential to a puppy’s best health and happiness. Just like human puppies!

Miki pampering Duke with a bath – prep for his total grooming experience.

Miki is a senior groomer at both the Tinton Falls and the Wall locations. She provides a range of grooming services to daycare and boarding guests from routine bathing, hair cuts and nail clipping, to more elaborate services like creative grooming (link to other blog post) and spa treatments that add a higher level of luxury to the grooming experience.

After more than 20 years grooming dogs of all breeds, there’s almost no grooming challenge she hasn’t tackled. “It’s important to start our puppies with a professional groomer as soon as puppy shots are completed,” says Miki. “Even though he/she is not ready for a haircut he/she does need to get used to being touched from nose to tail. The groomer can do simple things such as cleaning out pads and eyes to help him/her become accustomed to the clipper and scissors.”

Brushing is not only good for removing dandruff and dead hair, it also distributes healthy oils throughout the dog’s entire skin and coat. It allows the groomer to identify any issues with skin and coat early on when intervention is likely to be easier and more effective. “You can find lumps and bumps early before there is any discomfort. You can stop a flea infestation in its tracks.” says Miki.

And as many people know who have dogs with long hair, preventing matting problems is definitely worth it. A knot free pup is a happy pup. Small knots become big knots and big knots become  mats. “Grooming is a big part of our four legged babies lives, she affirms. “The cleaner they are the healthier they are. Whether you have a Lab or Old English Sheepdog, coat up keep is very important.” She continues, “Mats are very hard for a groomer to get out and the process is time consuming and the mats pull at the dog’s skin which can be very uncomfortable.”

Miki recommends that owners take the time to brush their dogs at home between grooming appointments. “At home brushing and combing is also very important,” she says. “It’s a great way to build trust between dog and human companion — it’s great bonding.”

Brushing and hair cuts are only one important aspect of good grooming. Nail and ear care are also important. Miki states, “Other benefits to frequent grooming is that the nails are maintained so it’s comfortable when the dog walks. “Ears are cleaned to help prevent infections.”

Bottom line, having a puppy is certainly a joy. We can look forward to sharing many years of unconditional love and fun with our four-legged companions, but it’s up to us to start early and help them develop into healthy, happy dogs.

Purr’n Pooch Swimming Lessons Give Dogs the Confidence to Get in the Water

Purr'n Pooch Swimming Lessons

Did you know not all dogs can swim? It’s true.

While paddling through the water comes naturally for some canines, not every breed is inclined to jump in and swim.

Jaime Plantamura, a swim instructor at Purr’n Pooch Pet Resorts, knows that it can take certain pups some time to feel comfortable in the water. That’s why she takes special time to make sure each and every dog that comes to Purr’n Pooch for swimming lessons gets individual attention and specialized lessons.

“Retrievers, labs and water dogs are at home in the water, but smaller dogs can have problems getting used to swimming,” said Jaime. “Every dog is different and they all have different needs for their personalities.”

So when James and Margaret Blumenstock of Brielle were concerned that their Cockapoo Daisy would drown in their inground pool, they came to Purr’n Pooch.

“When we got Daisy our pool was covered and Daisy saw it as a hammock and a big trampoline,” said James. “We didn’t want her to be at risk when the pool was uncovered in the summer since she had never been exposed to it.”

The Blumenstock’s had an acquaintance whose dog drowned in an inground pool, and they wanted to take precautions so that wouldn’t happen to Daisy. So at just 9 months old, Daisy began swimming lessons with Jaime.

“Our biggest concern was having Daisy be comfortable in a water environment if she was thrust into it,” said James. “You can’t always rely on instinct to kick in in a life-threatening situation.”

Fortunately, Daisy progressed steadily for never being in the water, and is now comfortable with swimming if the need ever arises.

To get pups started out in the water, Jaime and the other swim instructors at Purr’n Pooch pay careful attention to each dog’s reaction to the water. If they seem timid, Jaime tries to play with them near the water and on the steps to get them comfortable. The pups need to get accustomed to the noises and feel of the water before being fully submerged.

“A lot of it has to do with myself as well,” said Jaime. “They have to feel comfortable with me and trust me before they’ll even let me take them in the water.”

Jaime tries to make each lesson fun for the dogs, giving them treats to help with their adjustment. Dogs wear life jackets to help ease them into the water, where natural inclination allows them to start paddling without panicking.

“You can explain to a child what you’re doing when you’re teaching them to swim, but not to a dog,” said Jaime. “I try to be encouraging the entire time.”

And that encouragement worked with the now 1-year-old Daisy.

“The first time I brought her into the pool I carried her in and laid her gently in the water,” said James. “She was comfortable and didn’t panic at all. It’s a survival skill that I hope she never has to use, but she has it now.”

Purr’n Pooch offers aquatic exercise sessions in an indoor spa pool located in Wall, NJ. Experienced pet care technicians care and comfort pups with ease and patience. Swimming, games, and other exercise routines are part of the fun as dogs learn to move and play gently in the warm spa waters. Introduce your dog to the water correctly to build confidence, increase fitness and promote good health all while having fun. Private sessions are available and the pool setting is calm and quiet – ideal for relaxation and rejuvenation.

“Purr’n Pooch is great and we were very happy with the way Daisy learned there,” said James. “The swimming lessons exceeded our expectations.”

Protect Your Pets This Fourth of July

pets and fireworks

Who doesn’t love Fourth of July and summer fireworks? Your pet might not. Dogs, cats and other animals can get spooked easily by the loud bang of fireworks, and it’s our job to do whatever we can to help keep them safe. Animals may get scared or confused when the unexpected bang occurs, causing them to run away in fright, or otherwise injure themselves out of fear.

Here are some tips to help keep our animal friends safe during the Fourth of July and summer fireworks:

  1. Give pets a safe environment from the loud noises. Dogs often like to be in a small space when they feel frightened, such as their crate or dog bed. Cats routinely hide in closets or under beds during fireworks. Make sure you know where your furry friends are before and after the fireworks display.
  2. In or outdoors, avoid leaving pets alone during fireworks. If you must leave pets alone, make sure all windows and doors are securely shut. Familiar noises like the T.V., a fan or the air conditioner can help lessen the stress of the loud noises.
  3. If your pet seems scared, avoid punishment and speak calmly and cheerfully. Give pets a distraction from the loud booms with a KONG®toy full of treats. At Purr’n Pooch we fill the toy up with treats then seal it up with peanut butter and put it in the freezer. Pups love to lick the frozen peanut butter then get to the treat. Specific treats are made for pet relaxation. At both Purr’n Pooch retail store locations, we have Pet Naturals Vermont Calming Treats for all kinds of pets (a full supply of calming treats will be available June 15). All Natural Bully Sticks  are a good alternative.
  4. Gentle pressure can help relieve anxiety. If a furry friend feels stressed, a wrap fastened around the midsection can calm the nervous system through a hug-like pressure. We suggest using Thundershirt, available at both Purr’n Pooch locations in sizes XS, S, M, L, and XL.
  5. Don’t forget about the ears. Our pets are sensitive to loud noises just like us, and Mutt MuffsHearing Protection for dogs is a great way to protect hearing. The muffs are comfortable, lightweight and come with adjustable straps and wide, foam-filled ear seals for the highest level of comfort. Make sure to supervise your pooch while the muffs are on.
  6. ID your pet. Make sure all your pets have an ID tag or microchip so they can be returned to your loving home if they escape.
  7. Educate yourself. Make sure you know when your community and surrounding area is having fireworks displays so you can be prepared to protect your pets.

Here is a list of popular Jersey Shore fireworks displays:

  • Atlantic Highlands Fireworks: July 1 at 9:45 p.m.

  • Manasquan Fireworks: July 1 at dark

  • Atlantic City Fireworks: July 3 & 4 at 9:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.

  •  Bradley Beach Fireworks Display: July 3 at 9 p.m.

  •    Point Pleasant Beach: Every Thursday night at dark in July and August

  •  Wildwood: Every Friday night at 10 p.m. in July and August

From all of us at Purr’n Pooch, we wish you a very happy and safe Fourth of July together, pets and people. Remember to take care of our furry friends so we can all be safe and enjoy the summer.

Three-legged Dogs Enjoy the Sweet Rescue Life

Threeleggeddogs

They can run and play just as well as four-legged dogs. And especially love just as much or more. Three-legged dogs have adapted to life as normal, running, jumping and playing just like a dog with four legs.

Four special pups come to Purr’n Pooch for daycare to play with friends or to stay when their parents are away. These dogs hold special places in their parents’ hearts, as well as the staff at Purr’n Pooch who cares for them.

For Naomi, Karma, Lefty and Eddie, life as three-legged dogs has been sweet, thanks to their loving pet parents.

Naomi, a 4-year-old dachshund mix, was rescued by Lilly Lambert from the SPCA in Eatontown, who couldn’t resist her cute face. Lilly, who lives in Tinton Falls, had just lost her dog of 15 years and wasn’t sure if she was ready for another pup. Then she saw Naomi, who has only three legs, and knew it was her destiny to give her a good home.

“I immediately knew she was mine,” said Lilly. “There was just an instant bond with her. There was no adjustment period or getting used to each other period. We fit perfectly from the very beginning.”

For Daniel DeMuro of North Brunswick, it was a life or death situation. His dog Karma, who he rescued while in college, developed bone cancer. He opted to have the leg removed in an effort to save Karma.

“It’s now been over five years and it still baffles vets that Karma beat the odds stacked against him,” said Daniel.

Karma, a mini ridgeback/boxer mix, had a special place in Daniel’s heart before the surgery, and it’s safe to say that love has swelled due to Karma’s incredible resiliency.

“Every day with Karma is special and I realize even more so having almost lost him five years ago,” said Daniel. “It’s wonderful to see him live his life out gracefully, even if only on three legs. In fact, even better on three legs.”

Lefty is another special three-legged pooch who was rescued by Michael Miller and his wife. The two set out to rescue a dog who looked like a miniature version of their own shepherd/pit mix. But when Michael, who lives in Red Bank, noticed Lefty lying in the middle of the floor and laid down with him, it was an instant love.

The now 12-year-old German Shepherd/Akita mix had come to the shelter with his leg attached, but broken. The leg was amputated shortly before the Millers adopted Lefty.

“He had a pretty traumatic event as a puppy, but that hasn’t affected his personality in an adverse way,” said Michael. “He obviously was not treated properly by a previous owner but he still loves humans.”

Justine Keefe of Ocean Township found her three-legged love at Purr’n Pooch, where she works as a groomer. Eddie, formerly known as Romeo, had been rescued from the Dominican Republic by a local vet doing rescue work. Eddie had been hit by a car and his leg had to be amputated. His missing leg would have made it virtually impossible for him to be adopted in the Domincan Republic, so he was brought to New Jersey. Once here, he went through another surgery to remove a broken piece of bone in his hip socket. After several therapy sessions to build strength in his hind leg, Eddie now runs faster than ever before, even outrunning many dogs on the beach.

“What makes Eddie so special is his spirit,” said Justine. “As my neighbor put it, ‘he has every reason to be mad at the world and he isn’t!’ I think he knows he finally hit the jackpot when he came here and he really deserves it.”

Just as much as these spirited pups have had their lives changed by finding compassionate and caring parents, Lilly, Daniel, Michael and Justine are the true lucky ones.

“I feel so happy to have met Eddie,” said Justine. “He gives us so much. He loves us and his big sister, Nellie, and he was a great little brother to Harry, our senior dog who we lost in February. Eddie really compliments our whole family.”

When the Millers look at Lefty they don’t see a dog with special needs. They see a dog with a great personality who is now their family.

“I don’t see it as a big deal since we adopted a dog from a shelter, which is the important part,” said Michael. “He also happens to only have three legs.”

Speaking of personality, Karma is overflowing with it. While often calm and wise, Karma knows how to have a good time.

“Sometimes he can’t keep his joy inside his big personality with lots of energy,” said Daniel. “He lives to give love to others.”

Lilly finds joy in giving love to a dog who needs her.

“She’s so appreciative of the environment I can provide her,” said Lilly. “But she just gets me. She understands my psyche.”

All of these special dogs spend time at Purr’n Pooch, learning to socialize and getting the opportunity to run, jump and play with their pup friends.

Purr’n Pooch has the services and the staff available to care for special needs pets, and the building is adapted to their special needs.

“Living with my own dog Louise, who was an amputee due to cancer, made me understand and realize that animalswith disabilities are not disabled from loving or doing many activities,” said Dick Palazzo, president of Purr’n Pooch Pet Resorts.  “Louise gave back in return a love of life that I found unmeasurable to the norm. My passion for Louise and others like her inspired me to develop and build a unique environment at Purr’n Pooch to house and care for all pets, those with special needs, blind, deaf, geriatric, or any pet with a medical misfortune.”

Three-legged pets can live long and healthy lives with minimal adjustment to compensate for their missing limb. If you are interested in adopting a special animal, visit your local animal shelter.
