About the Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals

Too often we hear about the millions of unwanted animals killed in shelters across America each year or read about unfathomable cruelty inflicted on defenseless creatures. Fortunately, there are selfless, passionate individuals quietly saving lives – hands-on, one animal at a time.

With pure hearts, boundless energy and few resources, they work diligently day in and day out, to rescue animals in distress, heal their wounds, restore their confidence, and teach them to trust and love again.

The Purr’n Pooch Foundation is committed to helping these unsung heroes pursue their worthy missions. Regardless of species served, the Foundation supports those deserving organizations who do so much with so little.

SPRING INTO ACTION WITH DOG TRAINING AT PURR’N POOCH

Spring has sprung! The flowers are blooming and the weather is getting warmer. It’s the perfect season to enjoy time outside with your dog.

Is your dog’s behavior holding you back from enjoying the great outdoors? Tired of your baby pulling you around the park on the leash? Is he jumping for those burgers at the family barbecue? Is she having trouble listening to your basic commands like sit or stay? If any of these dilemmas are holding you back from enjoying a special day out-and-about with your best friend, we invite you and your pet to join us for training classes at Purr’n Pooch.

Spring is an ideal time to join Purr’n Pooch’s Trainer Iuliana Gedo, dip.CBST for her 6-week session of private and group classes for puppies and adolescents. A well-behaved, happy dog will enjoy an exciting summer of fun in the sun with family and friends!

Puppy Basics Class Starts Thursday, May 10th, 7:00 p.m.
(Puppies 10 Weeks – 5 Months)
Puppy Basics covers potty training, nutrition, bite inhibition and basic obedience, including walking nicely on leash, sit, down, stay, come and leave it/drop it.

Basic 1 Class Starts Wednesday, May 9th, 7:00 p.m.
(Dogs 6 Months & Older)
For the adolescent or adult dog that needs ‘basic training’. Our professional trainers will teach you how to teach your dog sit, down, stay (duration & distance), come, walking nicely on leash, leave it / drop it, and how to politely greet strangers. We’ll also show you how to address unwanted habits like jumping, mouthing, nipping, barking incessantly and becoming overly distracted in the presence of other dogs.

Our Certified Pet and Dog Trainers (CPDT) specialize in household manners, everyday commands and prepare your dog to obey instructions at home, in public and around other dogs. Our animal behavior training uses a reward-based curriculum that’s based on positive reinforcement. She has been a partner in the prestigious Community Training Program of Best Friends Animal Society since January of 2010. Training Tips

  • Training must be FUN in order for your dog to learn.
  • Training is not hard; it just takes time, patience, consistency and persistence.
  • Training is not a spectator sport. You must participate to achieve.
  • Training is a lifelong process. If you stop practicing with your pet, he or she will forget. Teach new tricks, play new games and practice commands in new places. Keep training interesting for both you and your dog’s sake.

“Understanding your dog and knowing how to control him, develop his potentials, and resolve behavior problems, emotional conflicts and frustrations are no less essential than love and respect.” Michael W. Fox

LUXURY PET RESORT RENOVATIONS AT PURR’N POOCH IN WALL

We’re in the final stages of renovations to our Wall Township Pet Resort. Renovations to our resorts mean more space and amenities. Our Wall location will soon feature an indoor aquatic center, new waterpark and playgrounds, grooming school, cattery jungle and luxury boarding suites for dogs and cats.

Since Purr’n Pooch was established in 1970, President Dick Palazzo continues to uniquely design and provide the best possible environment for Purr’n Pooch’s pet friends.

With your pets’ health and happiness in mind, our new additions will offer pups and cats more freedom to roam, play or just relax; added comfort and pet services; and protection from airborne viruses, allergens, dust and dander with a state-of-the-art ventilation and air purification system.

Today, dogs are already enjoying our expanded outside playground lined with new landscaping, agility courses and top-of-the-line antimicrobial turf. Our pups are lapping up the luxury daily with supervised outdoor games and exercise that sends them home exhausted and happy!

Soon to come will be a new water park and natural rock pool, an indoor aquatic center, spa, luxury dog suites (boasting televisions, leather sofas, porcelain tiles and more), a spacious indoor playroom and training hall.

Cats will also purr for our new “Jungle Room” Cattery, featuring a lavish and calming waterfall and play area. Our innovative cattery was personally designed by Dick Palazzo to house and entertain even the most finicky of cats.

We’re eager for our friends to enjoy time at our modern Wall resort by summer 2012. Check back for updates on our progress and information on the upcoming Grand Opening. In the meantime, please call for a visit and tour of our new outdoor playgrounds. Wall Township Location: 732-528-8100, 2424 Route 35, Wall Township, NJ 08736.

PURR’N POOCH FOUNDATION FOR ANIMALS HONORS HEROES IN ANIMAL WELFARE

Annual grants are awarded to non-profit, no-kill animal welfare organizations to be used for day-to-day operations, emergency relief, spay/neuter efforts, veterinary care, equipment, construction, vehicle purchases, educational programs and special projects.

Since the foundation was founded in 2010, grants totaling $35,000 have been awarded to nine nonprofit animal rescue organizations. 2012 grantees included the Cat Assistance Network, Greyhound Friends of NJ, Operation Kindness, Project Animal Worldwide, Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Special Needs K9, and St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center.

With pure hearts, boundless energy and few resources, our grantees work tirelessly to rescue, heal and restore the confidence and trust of animals in need,” said Elizabeth Palazzo, President, Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals. “Our Board is honored to support the inspiring work of unsung heroes in animal welfare.”

Inspiration for the Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals

The Purr’n Pooch Pet Resort celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2010 as a family owned and operated business. To honor the occasion, Dick and Mary Palazzo’s daughters Koren and Elizabeth founded the Foundation to continue their legacy of love. Today, the Purr’n Pooch Foundation for Animals is governed by an all-volunteer Board of Trustees whose enthusiasm, dedication and complementary skills have produced a high-functioning team with the sole focus of helping those who help animals.

HARLEY’S ON GOOD BEHAVIOR WITH TRAINING AT PURR’N POOCH

“Firm, but gentle. Demanding, but passionate. Sincere…”

If we were asked to describe Iuliana, the trainer we selected for our 11 month, work-in-progress, rescue named Harley, then these are the first thoughts that come to mind.

We were very fortunate to have a friend recommend Dick Palazzo, owner of Purr’n Pooch as a contact for someone to train our boxer “beast”. After describing Harley to him, he said “I have just the right trainer for you. Her name is Iuliana”. We spent our first hour at Purr’n Pooch in an upstairs training area with Harley and Iuli. We were horrified at how ill-mannered he was. Yet Iuli just stayed totally calm. She showed us how to discourage his aggressive behavior staying tranquil and rewarding him for doing well. Never once did she try to restrain him or raise her voice. We just sat there with our mouths agape. (Maybe there is hope).

Fast forward two months…he’s still a work-in-progress, but is so much more obedient. Iuli comes to our house and works with him – again reinforcing the positive with encouragement and treats. As we all agree, he’s very smart. He remembers commands. He keeps eye contact when training. But he’s still young and headstrong. But we’re sure he’s going to be a very special guy.

After each session Iuli send us summary reports and further training suggestions.
We will continue to work with Iuli and strongly recommend her skills and demeanor as a trainer extraordinaire.
